The instructions in this book were easy to follow. I do not regret purchasing this book. I keep it close when I am creating a new design. This book has taught me more than my local knitting classes; it teaches how to design while doubling as a reference book. There are also five patterns inside the book to help you apply what the book is teaching. The patterns are absolutely gorgous and inspiring. I would recommend it to anyone who is a knitter even if they were not interested in creating their own designs. |

Great resource for modifying or designing |
Initially this book seems intimidating with all of the formulas but it's going to be an amazing resource. I'm interested in modifying patterns, and after having taken a class with Shirley I'm inspired to design a sweater for myself and my husband. This book provides great detail for measuring, calculating yarn needed, how to write the pattern, etc.
If you've ever found a pattern you loved but weren't happy with the neckline, sleeves, etc this will be a great resource for you. Changing patterns to suit your tastes may not be simple, but the information in the book will make those modifications into an attainable goal.
If you want to design, this is the book for you, too! The book provides information on bodies, sleeves, etc and how to put them all together in a way you want.
It also comes with some of her amazing patterns towards the back of the book.
LOVE the spiral binding-book lays flat when in use. Nice added feature.
Definately recommend! |

Fantastic resource |
I bought this book entirely on the strength of other reviews (normally I won't buy a book unless I have already seen it in 'person'), and I agree with every word. This is a fantastic book!
It is hugely detailed and very advanced; way too advanced for me at this stage really, but I also found a lot of detailed information that everyone knitting any garment should know, but no-one ever explains. Like the fact that measurements on the pictures of shapes of patterns don't include the edge stitches, because they will be taken up by the seams! Like the fact that those stitches are added in the pattern but no-one explains that they are the same 'selvedge' stitches talked about but not properly explained in technique books. The only thing that annoys me about this explanation is that she doesn't distinguish between 'selvedge' meaning a different treatment of the edge stitch and 'seam allowance' (which term she doesn't use at all).
I also agree with the review that said that her explanation of gauge and swatches is alone worth the price of the book. After one failed attempt at drafting my own pattern, I had become discouraged with my ability to measure gauges, knit to gauge and so on. She showed me the problems with the standard methods and how to get a much more accurate result.
The bulk of the book is taking you through a number of different pattern shapes in detail. You can mix and match between body shapes, armholes shapes and neckline/collar shapes etc to make your own garment. This means there is a lot of repetition, so it is true that it is a 'workshop' rather than an interesting read. I actually plowed through the entire book with some effort and found it enhanced my understanding of garment construction and pattern drafting considerably.
The one thing to note about this book is that is has a lot of maths in it. This would probably really scare some people. If so, it might be better to go for an simpler book that helps you alter existing patterns or draft from their own templates more. But if you want to be able to design and draft a pattern for a garment completely from scratch, this is a great book. |

A good start for learning to design knitwear. |
The techniques and designs that are covered in this book are covered well: numerous sweater styles and some other garments are gone through methodically and logically using well-set out arithmetic equations, charts and photos of example pieces in the featured style. Many types of detailing are covered - the numerous neck-lines, collars and sleeves will cover most projects I can imagine designing.
Unfortunately, several techniques and design elements are missing: top-down, circular-knit design; and more importantly any coverage of shaping to give 3-d contours such as vertical or horizontal darts. I'm going to need another book for that! Also missing are any tutorials for designing small items such as gloves or socks. Again, I'm going to need another work to help me with that, even though some techniques here could be extrapolated to such items.
Despite these criticisms there is much to gain from this book and I'm very pleased to have it. It is already inspiring me to start designing items I wouldn't have thought of before. |

Love this book!! |
|
I really bought this book for the pattern on the cover. I think that coat is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen!!I am not interested in designing by own knitting but if I were this WOULD be the book to use for that. I'm glad I have it in my knitting library. |
